Ageing in the Arctic project highlights winter challenges for elderly in Bodø
The “Ageing in the Arctic” project, funded by DOGA and the Research Council of Norway, has highlighted significant challenges for elderly residents in Bodø due to harsh winter conditions. Conducted by Fabric+ and a multidisciplinary team, the study surveyed over 300 older adults to understand the impact of climate on aging in urban environments.
Findings indicate that winter weather, ice, and darkness often negate universal design efforts, making it difficult for seniors to remain active and social. Approximately 33% of respondents knew several people who avoid going outdoors during winter due to weather and icy conditions, while 28% knew a few. This lack of mobility can lead to social isolation, reduced confidence, and increased risks of cardiovascular disease and dementia.
