Agentenkinder: The impact of GDR espionage on families

The documentary series ‘Agentenkinder - Wenn die Eltern spionieren’ examines the personal impact of espionage on the children of intelligence officers in East and West Germany. The series highlights how children grew up in environments defined by secrecy, deception, and the eventual fallout when their parents' double lives were exposed.

One central case involves Werner Stiller, an officer for the East German foreign intelligence service who defected to the West in 1979 with classified documents. His daughter, Edina Gade, describes the family being treated as outcasts and subjected to ‘Sippenhaft’ (collective punishment) in the GDR, including forced relocations to Wandlitz and Cottbus.

Other accounts include Pierre Boom, whose life was upended when his father, Günter Guillaume, was exposed as a GDR spy within the West German Chancellery in 1974, and Thomas Raufeisen, who faced imprisonment in a Stasi prison following his father's actions. The stories focus on the lifelong consequences of political decisions made by parents on their families.
