Agentic AI transforms chip design and EDA workflows

Agentic artificial intelligence is poised to transform electronic design automation (EDA), particularly within the open-source ecosystem. By automating complex workflows, generating commands, and optimizing designs for power and performance, AI agents can reduce the high level of specialized expertise typically required for chip design. Unlike proprietary platforms, open-source tools allow AI agents to access underlying code, enabling them to investigate failures, propose modifications, and run regression tests to create a continuous improvement loop for projects like OpenROAD.

At the DAC 2026 conference, discussions highlighted the role of agentic AI in addressing bottlenecks such as verification, debugging, and analog design. GenAlpha, led by CEO Dan Fritchman, is introducing a practical approach to analog AI. Given that analog design tasks can take significantly longer than other chip design components, GenAlpha aims to provide software infrastructure that allows humans, conventional programs, and machine-learning systems to collaborate more effectively on integrated circuit design.
