Agentic pentesting addresses rapid exploitation windows
Agentic pentesting is emerging as a method to autonomously discover, validate, and exploit attack paths, aiming to bridge the gap between vulnerability disclosure and exploitation. The effectiveness of these tools is measured by three critical factors: what they can prove, how quickly they produce that proof, and the extent of the environment they cover.
Recent data highlights the urgency for faster validation. In the first half of 2026, CVE counts rose by 49.5% year-over-year. Crucially, the mean time from disclosure to exploitation dropped from 21.5 days in 2025 to just 8 hours in 2026. This rapid window makes traditional annual or even weekly penetration testing insufficient, as they leave significant blind spots.
To address these challenges, Gartner has introduced the Continuous Offensive Security Testing (COST) model. This approach moves away from point-in-time assessments toward trigger-driven, risk-tiered testing designed to operate within the narrow windows required by modern exploitation speeds.
