Agenzia delle Entrate impersonation scam targets Italian citizens
A widespread smishing and phishing campaign is targeting citizens in Italy by impersonating the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Revenue Agency). Criminal organizations are using spoofing techniques to send fraudulent SMS messages and emails that mimic official institutional graphics, logos, and typography to appear legitimate.
The scams primarily use the promise of an imminent tax refund (Irpef) to create a false sense of urgency. In some instances, messages claim a specific high amount, such as €5,626, is expiring soon to pressure victims into clicking malicious hyperlinks. These links lead to clone websites designed to steal sensitive personal data, banking credentials, and financial information.
The Agenzia delle Entrate has issued warnings clarifying that the institution never sends communications of this nature containing links. Once victims enter their details into the fraudulent portals, attackers can drain bank accounts or sell stolen digital identities.
