Agia farmers protest delays in frost compensation
Agricultural associations and cooperatives in the Agia municipality of Larissa are protesting delays and potential reductions in compensation following the spring 2025 frost. Producers report that despite ELGA conducting individualized on-site inspections, there are attempts to use statistical averages and mathematical models to settle claims, which farmers argue will lead to significantly lower payouts.
Compensation for cherry crops has been delayed for approximately 18 months, leaving local farms in a financial deadlock. Additionally, apple producers in the region are demanding inclusion in the ad hoc support regime that was applied to other regions affected by the same frost event.
Member of Parliament Evangelia Liakouli has raised the issue in the Greek Parliament, questioning the Ministry regarding the timeline for issuing official findings based on actual damage per tree and acre. She emphasized that producers are seeking fair and timely compensation to cope with rising production costs and the impacts of the climate crisis.
