Agia farmers protest over delayed agricultural compensations

Farmers in Agia, organized by the United Federation of Agricultural Associations of Larissa Prefecture (EOASNL), have scheduled a protest for Monday, August 31, at the central square. The demonstration coincides with the opening of the local Milo Festival.

The protesters are demanding the immediate payment of outstanding compensations from ELGA and the Ministry of Rural Development. Key grievances include an 18-month delay in payments for cherry frost damage from 2025, as well as missing results from official assessments.

Additionally, producers of apples, chestnuts, and walnuts are seeking inclusion in aid programs for production losses caused by heatwaves and pre-anthesis frost. Livestock farmers are also calling for compensation following recent extreme weather events and a plan to restock herds. Farmers expressed concerns regarding rising production costs and low market prices, stating they refuse to be treated as ‘second-class farmers’.
