Agility Robotics unveils Digit 5 humanoid robot for shared workspaces
Agility Robotics has unveiled Digit 5, its next-generation general-purpose humanoid robot designed for safe operation in shared workspaces alongside humans. Based in Salem, Oregon, the company has secured $300 million in orders for the new model.
Digit 5 features a specialized safety architecture that uses proprietary AI algorithms and sensors, including Nvidia’s Thor IGX chip, to monitor for human presence. To prevent accidents, the robot is programmed to avoid people, stop, or assume a seated position if a worker enters its immediate space. This design allows the machine to operate in environments without the physical safety barriers typically required for industrial automation.
The robot is capable of repeatedly lifting loads up to 50 pounds. It features a 90-minute runtime battery that charges in nine minutes, providing a 10:1 run-to-charge ratio and enabling over 20 hours of productivity in a 24-hour period. Agility Robotics intends for Digit 5 to handle diverse tasks in manufacturing and logistics, such as depalletizing, kitting, and quality inspection. The company currently utilizes its robots in commercial operations for companies including Amazon and Toyota.
