Aging alters walking patterns to prioritize stability over speed
Research conducted by Flinders University and the University of Canberra suggests that aging alters walking patterns by prioritizing stability over speed and energy efficiency. A study involving 107 healthy adults aged 26 to 86 found that older individuals often adopt a “safety-first” walking strategy.
One key finding is the increased occurrence of “co-contraction” in the ankle. This occurs when opposing muscles around the ankle joint activate simultaneously, creating a stiffer joint. While this stiffness provides greater stability when the foot contacts the ground, it requires more muscular effort and reduces the force of propulsion.
These physiological changes result in shorter, slower strides and increased fatigue. Researchers noted that while these adaptations help prevent falls by increasing stability, they also make walking longer distances more difficult and may reduce the ability to recover from trips or slips. The findings suggest that exercise programs for older adults should emphasize balance and coordination alongside strength training.
