As individuals age, particularly after 45, physiological changes significantly impact sleep quality and the body's ability to recover from sleep deprivation.
For men, frequent nighttime urination, or nocturia, often becomes a concern due to factors such as increasing prostate volume, which can impede urine flow and leave residue in the bladder. Other contributing factors include sleep apnea, diabetes, certain medications, and dietary habits like excessive salt or caffeine intake late in the day. Medical professionals suggest monitoring fluid intake and maintaining a bladder diary to identify patterns.
Furthermore, the biological capacity to recover from a single night of lost sleep diminishes with age. Due to a decrease in melatonin production and a reduction in the intensity of deep, slow-wave sleep, the body takes longer to clear metabolic waste and regulate cortisol levels. While a younger person might recover within 24 hours, those over 45 may require 48 to 72 hours to return to baseline cognitive and physical function.
