Aging population initiatives launch in Germany and Austria

Various initiatives in Germany and Austria are focusing on the challenges and opportunities of an aging population. In Germany, a soap bubble campaign is planned for October 1, 2026, to mark World Seniors Day, encouraging people to participate in public spaces to promote the motto ‘Yes to Aging’ and visibility for all ages in society.

The Johanniter organization has highlighted that as of late 2025, approximately 18.9 million people in Germany—over 22 percent of the population—are aged 65 or older. They advocate for a shift in focus from purely discussing challenges like pension crises and care costs toward celebrating the achievement of increased longevity and fostering meaningful intergenerational dialogue.

In Austria, the agenda. zukunft ProjektLabor recently convened in Vöcklabruck to develop solutions for quality of life in old age. The workshop resulted in four project ideas, including the potential transformation of a family farm into a residential or day-care facility for seniors and the creation of intergenerational living communities.
