Aging Skin Becomes More Vulnerable to UV Damage, Experts Urge Precautions

Dermatologists explain that the skin loses about 10 % of its melanin‑producing cells every decade, reducing its natural protection against ultraviolet radiation. As a result, people over 60 are far more prone to sunburn and have a higher risk of developing skin cancer, prompting health officials to stress the continued use of sunscreen and protective clothing for seniors.

After the summer, the skin’s outer layer thickens and becomes dehydrated due to UV exposure, salt and chlorine. Experts recommend a post‑summer regimen that includes gentle chemical exfoliation with fruit acids, followed by intensive hydration using hyaluronic acid, ceramides and niacinamide to restore the barrier and revive skin tone.
