Aging workforce threatens US home-based childcare sector

A significant portion of the home-based childcare workforce in the United States is aging, raising concerns about future availability for families. Federal survey data indicates that more than half of licensed or registered home-based childcare providers are over the age of 50, while only 4 percent are aged 29 or younger.

This demographic trend contrasts with larger childcare centers, where approximately one-third of employees are under the age of 29. In unregistered or unlisted home-based settings, the age distribution is more balanced, with roughly 30 percent of providers being over 50 and a similar percentage being 29 or younger.

Providers like Sylvia Crews, who has operated her own center in Washington, D.C., for nearly a decade, express concern regarding how to attract and involve a younger generation of workers to replace those nearing retirement.
