Agios Dimitrios Power Plant demolition faces Council of State lawsuit
The Council of State is scheduled to hear a legal challenge regarding the planned demolition of the Agios Dimitrios Power Plant. The lawsuit, signed by 50 citizens but supported by thousands, opposes the destruction of lignite-based energy infrastructure.
The Kozani Town Planning office has granted permission to the Public Power Corporation (PPC) to proceed with the demolition, which includes the planned blasting of five cooling towers. Opponents of the move argue that destroying these facilities permanently eliminates electricity production capacity during a global energy crisis. Critics also contend that the infrastructure represents public and worker property, noting that significant investments were made in recent years, including a 100 million euro environmental upgrade to the plant's fifth unit in 2022.
