Agios Georgios Nileas revives traditional fava custom

The village of Agios Georgios Nileas in Pelion recently revived its historic tradition of preparing and offering traditional fava made from broad beans (koukia). The two-day event is deeply rooted in the region's religious and culinary history.

The first day is dedicated to the collective preparation of the dish. Residents gather at the historic Agios Athanasios Holy Church, dating back to 1795, to clean and cook the beans in large pots using traditional methods. This process serves as a communal gathering where elders pass down cooking secrets and memories to younger generations.

The tradition culminates on the second day, coinciding with the feast of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist. Following religious services and Vespers at the church, the prepared fava is distributed in individual cups to worshippers and visitors, maintaining a custom that emphasizes community solidarity and local identity.
