Agios Nikolaos municipality on high alert for wildfire risk
The Municipality of Agios Nikolaos has entered a state of high alert following a Civil Protection warning regarding an extremely high risk of wildfires across Crete. The risk level for the Lasithi prefecture is classified as category 5, an alarm state effective through the weekend of August 30, 2026.
Local authorities, including Mayor Emmanouil Menegakis and representatives from the Fire Service, Police, and Civil Protection, convened a meeting of the Local Operational Coordinating Body of Civil Protection (TESOPP) to coordinate emergency readiness. The heightened alert is driven by forecasts of strong winds expected to persist in the region, increasing the danger of fire outbreaks.
