Agios Nikolaos suspends schools due to severe weather
The Municipality of Agios Nikolaos has announced the suspension of all schools and nursery stations for Friday, October 2, 2026. This follows a previous decision by the Crete Region to close educational units in the Lasithi regional unit on Thursday, October 1, due to severe weather.
The decision aims to allow for necessary facility inspections and to address potential issues as the weather phenomenon subsides. Local authorities noted that the recent rainfall was exceptionally intense, with the Agios Nikolaos river experiencing water flow levels not seen in the last 50 years.
In response to the strain on existing infrastructure, the municipality is calling for a redesign of flood protection systems and improved drainage networks. Local civil protection teams remain on high alert to monitor affected areas.
