Agios Nikolaos unveils Tzoumerka Street to honor Epirus heritage
The cultural two-day event ‘Paths of Arta’ concluded in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, featuring the official naming and unveiling of the ‘Tzoumerka Street’ sign. The ceremony was co-organized by the Association of Epirotes of Lasithi and the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos, with support from the Municipality of Arta.
The naming of the street fulfills a vision initiated in March 2012 by the Association of Epirotes. During the ceremony, the Mayor of Agios Nikolaos, Manolis Menegakis, emphasized that the street serves as more than a geographical route, acting as a link between the histories and collective memories of Crete and Epirus. He highlighted shared historical struggles, citing figures such as Epirus native Hadjimichalis Dalianis and Cretan volunteers who fought in Epirus during the liberation of Ioannina in 1912-1913.
