Agios Sostis chapel in Pelion requires protection

The Agios Sostis chapel, located south of Lefokastro in the Pelion region of Greece, is a Middle Byzantine era monument situated on a rocky peninsula overlooking the Pagasetic Gulf. The small, single-story structure measures approximately 4.5 by 3.4 meters and features a semicircular apse on its eastern side.

Local tradition suggests the chapel may have replaced an even older Byzantine or Early Christian site. This is supported by archaeological findings in the nearby Kalogria area, where domed tombs from an Early Christian cemetery have been discovered.

Later additions were made to the western side of the building. These structures differ significantly in construction style from the original chapel and from each other. Due to the presence of various towers and observation posts along the Magnesia coastline, it is theorized that these western additions may have once served as a small lookout point over the gulf.

The site is dedicated to Saint Sozon, known in local tradition as Saint Sostis, a Christian martyr who lived during the late 3rd century under the reigns of Emperors Diocletian and Maximian.
