Agios Vasileios municipality secures €1.5 million road funding after wildfire damage
Following the destructive wildfires that struck the western Attica region, the General Directorate for Restoration of Natural Disaster Impacts (GDAEFK) inspected 55 buildings in the Agios Vasileios municipality. The assessment classified 24 structures as habitable, 12 as temporarily uninhabitable and 19 as dangerous or slated for demolition. Overall, 325 building inspections have been completed nationwide, with 118 buildings placed in the red‑danger category.
In response to the emergency, the municipality obtained €1.5 million to continue work on the Agios Vasileios coastal road. The funding will cover widening and resurfacing of the route, a critical evacuation corridor that proved essential during the fires. The project, supported by MP Dora Bakoyannis and Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios, aims to improve local transport, boost tourism and enhance public safety.
Mayor Giannis Tatarakis highlighted the road’s dual role as a development axis and a lifesaving infrastructure, noting that the recent fires demonstrated its importance for rapid access by fire services and safe evacuation of residents and visitors.
