Buenos Aires teachers strike on June 30 shuts schools, demands salary raise and safety measures
On Tuesday 30 June 2026, four teachers’ unions – AMET, FEB, SUTEBA and UDOCBA – forming the Frente de Unidad Docente Bonaerense (FUDB) organised a province‑wide 24‑hour strike in Buenos Aires. More than 90 % of public schools in the province reported suspension of classes, with adherence measured at 88‑95 % in several districts.
The unions demand an urgent reopening of collective‑bargaining (paritarias) to re‑compose teachers’ salaries, citing a loss of purchasing power despite a cumulative 9.3 % pay increase earlier in the year. They also call for the restoration of the Fondo Nacional de Incentivo Docente (FONID), measures to curb increasing violence in schools, limits on workload and guarantees of digital‑off‑hours disconnection. Additional requests include funding for technical‑education programmes, protection of IOMA health‑benefit provisions, and safeguards for the Instituto de Previsión Social (IPS) against proposed pension reforms.
Governor Axel Kicillof’s administration has not presented a new salary offer, arguing fiscal constraints caused by reduced national transfers and a broader economic slowdown. The strike marks the second major teachers’ protest during his tenure, after a similar action in March 2026, and adds pressure on provincial and national authorities to address the sector’s financial and security concerns.
