Agnico Eagle Mines reports tailings spill at Detour Lake mine
Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. is managing a tailings spill at its Detour Lake gold mine in northern Ontario. The incident occurred on August 29 when a pipeline carrying detoxified process slurry cracked, causing material to escape into nearby Easter Creek.
The company reported that its spill detection system immediately alerted personnel, allowing workers to isolate the damaged pipeline and stop the release. Environmental crews have been deployed to collect samples and monitor the area to assess the extent of the discharge and its impact on the surrounding water and environment.
Detour Lake is Canada’s largest gold-producing mine and holds the country’s largest gold mineral reserves. Agnico Eagle has implemented containment, recovery, and remediation measures while awaiting further assessment to determine if long-term environmental monitoring will be required.
