AGOA extended to 2028 following U.S. presidential signature

President Donald Trump has signed legislation extending the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) until December 31, 2028. The law, H.R. 6500, was approved by the U.S. Senate in August and the House of Representatives on September 1, following a period of uncertainty regarding the program's future.

The extension provides critical market access for several sub-Saharan African nations. In Mauritius, the decision secures the U.S. market for 79 companies, representing approximately Rs 6.8 billion in exports, particularly within the textile and apparel manufacturing sectors. This outcome follows diplomatic efforts led by Mauritian officials in Washington.

In Madagascar, the extension is expected to bolster the textile industry, which relies on the U.S. as a primary export destination, as well as agricultural sectors such as vanilla and spices. Malagasy officials stated that the move should increase confidence among exporters and investors by providing long-term economic visibility.
