Agrarian leaders Javier Sánchez and Ester Latorre found dead in Spain

International agrarian organizations are expressing profound indignation following the violent deaths of Javier Sánchez Ansó and Ester Latorre Larrodé in Tauste, Spain. The couple, prominent leaders of the Unión de Agricultores y Pecuaristas de Aragón (UAGA), were found in their residence with signs of violence.

Javier Sánchez was a long-standing figure in the peasant movement, serving as secretary-general of UAGA from 1999 to 2010 and holding leadership roles in the Coordenadora de Organizaciones de Agricultores y Pecuaristas (COAG). He was also a significant contributor to the international movement La Vía Campesina.

Ester Latorre was a dedicated farmer and leader who founded the women's sector within UAGA. Both individuals were recognized globally for their commitment to food sovereignty and workers' rights. Organizations including CLOC-Vía Campesina and the Brazilian Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST) have issued statements of solidarity and condemnation regarding the incident.
