Agreena secures major seven-year carbon deal in Kazakhstan

Agreena has secured a seven-year carbon credit agreement covering 4.45 million metric tons of CO2e, marking one of the largest and longest-term agricultural carbon deals to date. The project, registered under Verra as project 6105, focuses on 1.6 million hectares of farmland within Kazakhstan’s grain belt.

The initiative aims to transition these lands to regenerative management practices, such as reduced tillage and cover cropping, by 2028. These methods are expected to improve soil health, water retention, and biodiversity while potentially reducing diesel consumption by 40 to 60 liters per hectare.

Frederik Aagaard, Agreena’s Chief Commercial Officer, stated that the long-term nature of the agreement provides the necessary infrastructure and an economic safety net for farmers to change their production methods. The deal signals a shift in the agricultural carbon market from spot transactions toward long-term volume commitments to ensure supply at scale.
