Agri-PV pilot project achieves first grain harvest between solar modules
A pilot project in Stedorf, Germany, has reached a milestone with the first grain harvest conducted between vertically mounted solar modules. This Agri-Photovoltaic (Agri-PV) initiative aims to simultaneously generate solar power and maintain agricultural production on the same land area.
The University of Kassel is leading scientific evaluations to determine how shading from the modules affects crop yields for both field and vegetable farming. Concurrently, the Institute for Solar Energy Research (ISFH) is conducting technical assessments regarding the system's performance and the potential impact of dust or temporary shading on electricity production.
Complementary research involving the University of Hohenheim has examined how various crops, including barley, beans, potatoes, cabbage, and corn, adapt to partial shading. Findings suggest that some plants can adjust their photosynthesis, reducing respiration costs and light requirements to maintain a positive carbon balance, which may explain why certain crops are more resilient to shading than previously expected.
