Agria Dyreforsikring urges monthly lump checks for dogs
Only 33 percent of dog owners in Denmark check their pets for lumps on a monthly basis, according to Agria Dyreforsikring. Experts emphasize that establishing a regular routine of physical examination is vital, as early detection of changes can significantly impact the prognosis if a tumor is cancerous.
While not all lumps are malignant, owners cannot distinguish between benign and cancerous growths by touch alone. Common types of cancer to watch for include skin tumors—which may appear as new lumps, swellings, or changes in skin texture—and mammary gland tumors. Risk factors for canine cancer include aging and hereditary traits, with certain breeds being more susceptible to specific types.
Agria Dyreforsikring recommends that owners thoroughly feel their dogs at least once a month. Any new or changing lumps should be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine if further investigation or treatment, such as surgery, medication, or radiation, is necessary.
