Agricultural and fishing sectors report mixed production trends in Portugal and Mozambique

In Portugal, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) forecasts a 15% increase in pear production for 2026, reaching an estimated 143,000 tonnes. While productivity in the Oeste region rose significantly compared to the previous campaign, the total remains slightly below the five-year average. This follows sanitary pruning to control bacterial fire and a reduction in productive potential. Although fruit quality and sugar levels are high, summer extreme temperatures may impact preservation, and fruit sizes are smaller than in 2025.

In Mozambique, fish production at the Port of Beira reached 5,049 tonnes through September, representing approximately 69% of the annual target of 7,350 tonnes. The sector faces challenges due to fuel shortages and operational limitations of the fishing fleet. Director António Remédio noted that vessel moorings decreased by 5% while time spent at docks increased by 4%, as fuel scarcity forces many boats to remain stationary rather than returning to sea.
