Agricultural authorities in Chile and Uruguay update livestock regulations

Agricultural authorities in Chile and Uruguay are implementing new regulations to enhance animal traceability and food safety.

In Chile, the Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero (SAG) has updated regulations regarding the traceability of equines, mules, and donkeys. The update introduces a phased implementation of mandatory microchip identification. While requirements for sporting and breeding animals remain active for August 2025 and April 2026, owners of domestic, working, or recreational animals have until February 25, 2028, to comply. The goal is to strengthen the response to zoosanitary emergencies.

In Uruguay, the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries (MGAP) will launch an automated sanitary restriction mechanism on August 19, 2026. This system will use data from the National Livestock Information System (SNIG) to monitor veterinary medicine withdrawal periods. The tool will automatically prevent cattle from being cleared for slaughter if the required waiting period for a specific medication has not been met, ensuring food safety and preventing chemical residues in animal products.
