Agricultural biotechnology advances in Argentina and Chile

In Argentina, the agricultural sector is increasingly adopting bioinputs—products derived from living organisms—to enhance crop development. A key player in this movement is Rizobacter, a company under the Bioceres group that specializes in microbial technologies for soybean production.

Rizobacter has developed Rizomix, an inoculant containing Bradyrhizobium and Pseudomonas pergaminensis. This technology aims to improve nutrient availability by assisting in biological nitrogen fixation and phosphorus solubilization. While these bioinputs can reduce the necessity for certain synthetic fertilizers, they are intended to complement existing fertilization practices rather than replace them entirely.

In Chile, research led by INIA, Curimapu, and the University of Concepción is focusing on seed pelleting technology. This process involves coating alfalfa seeds with beneficial bacteria to improve their ability to survive in dryland conditions, specifically targeting the Kauke alfalfa variety.
