Agricultural experts discuss weed management and nutrient recovery

Agricultural experts and researchers are highlighting new approaches to crop management and fertilization. Agronomist Paweł Antkowiak from the Wielkopolski Ośrodek Doradztwa Rolniczego noted that herbicide effectiveness depends on a holistic production system. Factors such as crop rotation, fertilization, and tillage methods significantly impact weed control. Specifically, the rise in no-till farming and a lack of crop diversity can exacerbate weed pressure in cereal crops.

In parallel, a large-scale international study published in ‘Frontiers in Environmental Science’ suggests that fertilizers recovered from human waste could serve as viable alternatives to conventional products. An analysis of 455 datasets from 32 countries found that processed fertilizers derived from urine and feces do not cause a systematic decrease in crop yields compared to traditional fertilizers. While this offers a way to close the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium cycles, researchers emphasized that widespread adoption requires improved purification technologies and stricter regulations regarding drug residues and PFAS.
