Agricultural experts warn of grain bin entrapment risks
Agricultural experts are issuing safety warnings ahead of National Farm Safety and Health Week, which runs from September 21-25. This year’s observance focuses on hidden hazards and includes a Day of Awareness for Confined Spaces on September 24.
Todd Lorenz, a field specialist with the University of Missouri Extension, highlighted the extreme danger of grain bin entrapments, noting they are among the most preventable farm accidents. He warned that flowing grain can pull an adult knee-deep in just four seconds and completely bury them within 20 seconds. Once caught, the pressure from the moving grain makes escape nearly impossible.
To prevent fatalities, experts recommend that farmers establish safety protocols and training before the harvest begins, particularly for seasonal workers who may be less familiar with equipment. Key safety measures include:
• Never entering a grain bin alone and utilizing a buddy system. • Using lockout/tagout equipment to shut down power sources. • Using harnesses attached to fall-restraint systems anchored outside the bin. • Avoiding walking on grain or entering areas with bridged or crusted surfaces. • Maintaining proper moisture and temperature levels to reduce the need for bin entry.
