Moldova hits record wheat exports amid regional logistics challenges

Agricultural export trends in Eastern Europe show significant shifts in grain and oilseed markets. Moldova has reached a record for wheat exports during July-August 2026, totaling 378.2 thousand tons. This volume has positioned Moldova as the second-largest wheat supplier to the European Union, surpassing both Serbia and Ukraine.

However, the sector faces logistical challenges. Significant border congestion, with approximately 200 trucks waiting at Moldovan borders, has led local traders to reduce grain purchases. Increased transport and maritime freight costs are also eroding profit margins despite higher market prices. In the sunflower oil sector, Ukrainian exports were limited by railway blockages at western borders and security risks.

Rapeseed exports from Moldova decreased by 16.6% compared to the previous year, though higher average prices helped maintain export values. Meanwhile, Russian grain exports saw a sharp decline in early September, with wheat shipments dropping nearly sixfold compared to the same period last year.
