Agricultural funding faces pressure in Extremadura and the EU

Agricultural interests in Spain and the European Union are facing significant financial uncertainty. In Extremadura, the organization La Unión has accused the regional government of neglecting farmers. The group claims that while the regional administration cites budget constraints to deny aid to table olive producers and those affected by spring storms, it is simultaneously planning to reduce the 'ecotasa' tax for electricity companies owning the Almaraz nuclear plant. This tax reduction is projected to result in revenue losses of 25 million euros in 2027, rising to 74 million euros by 2029.

On a broader scale, the future of the Common Agricultural Policy (PAC) is under negotiation in Brussels. Disagreements between EU member states regarding the 2028-2034 Multiannual Financial Framework could lead to a 20% reduction in agricultural funds. Negotiators aim to reach an agreement by the end of the year to avoid delays caused by upcoming elections in Spain, France, Italy, and Poland, which could complicate the budgetary process.
