Agricultural guidance for winterizing grapevines and gladiolus bulbs

Agricultural guidelines have been issued regarding the seasonal care of grapevines and gladiolus bulbs to ensure survival through winter.

For grapevines, sensitive varieties should be buried by the end of November to protect them from early frosts of −6 °C or lower, which can damage the buds for the following year. While dormant vines can generally withstand temperatures between −12 °C and −20 °C, early frosts prevent proper maturation and reserve accumulation. Data from the Meteorological and Environmental Monitoring Authority (AMM) indicates that the first frosts typically occur between October 12 and 26, with vegetation ending when daily averages stabilize below +5 °C in early to mid-November.

Gladiolus bulbs, which are frost-sensitive, require excavation to prevent damage. It is recommended to dig them up approximately 35 to 45 days after flowering ends, typically during September or October. This timing allows the bulbs to accumulate necessary nutrients for the dormant period. Proper storage conditions are essential to protect them from cold and moisture to ensure blooming in the following season.
