Agricultural harvest season prompts road safety warnings
As the grain harvest season begins in various regions, transport authorities are issuing safety warnings regarding the increased presence of large, slow-moving farm machinery on rural and regional roads.
In Australia, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has highlighted the importance of vehicle maintenance and driver fatigue management. With favorable rainfall boosting conditions in South Australia and Victoria, the NHVR expects increased heavy vehicle movements and potential supply chain pinch points. Officials are urging operators to conduct regular inspections and pre-start checks to ensure roadworthiness and prevent non-compliance.
In the United States, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is advising motorists to exercise caution when sharing roads with oversized agricultural equipment. MnDOT reported 392 crashes involving farm equipment between 2023 and 2025, resulting in 12 deaths and 167 injuries. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, eliminate distractions, and allow sufficient space when passing equipment that may travel at speeds as low as 20 miles per hour.
