Agricultural initiatives focus on heritage seeds and meat quality in France
In the Basque region, the association Arto Gorria is celebrating its tenth anniversary by highlighting the preservation of the Grand Roux maize variety. Established in 2016, the group works to prevent the disappearance of this traditional seed in favor of standardized industrial varieties. By promoting collective multiplication and reintroduction, the association helps farmers maintain autonomy over their seeds and reduce dependence on commercial seed firms. The genetic diversity of Grand Roux also provides increased resilience against climate change and weather fluctuations.
Meanwhile, the Fin Gras du Mézenc AOP held its general assembly to review a solid 2026 season. Despite market volatility in the cattle sector, the association reported involvement from 174 breeders and 153 traditional butchers. Key objectives for 2027 include maintaining breeder numbers, strengthening the product's image, and revising quality standards to adapt to future challenges while remaining faithful to natural pasture-based production. The assembly also addressed nutritional quality and herd health through initiatives like the Bleu-Blanc-Cœur démarche, which links production methods to food composition and health benefits.
