Agricultural initiatives in Indonesia promote food sovereignty

Various initiatives in Indonesia are working to bolster food sovereignty and farmer welfare through education and diversification. In Pati, Central Java, the Mitra Tani Dua Tujuh program provides farmers with sustainable agricultural training, focusing on organic farming, land management, and the use of organic fertilizers. The program encourages crop diversification to minimize harvest failure risks and stabilize economic income.

Simultaneously, the Muhammadiyah organization is mobilizing its Jamaah Tani Muhammadiyah (JTM) network, which includes over 5,000 farmers. The group is developing superior varieties of rice, vegetables, plantations, and livestock. To address the aging farmer population, Muhammadiyah is focusing on regenerating the sector by involving Gen Z, millennials, and agricultural students. Additionally, the organization is promoting urban farming to utilize city land for family food needs and utilizing scientific approaches to manage dry land caused by weather challenges.
