Agricultural innovation and AI take center stage in Dutch farming sector
Agricultural innovation and technology were central themes at recent industry events in the Netherlands. At Inagro, researchers presented new findings regarding strawberry cultivation. Trials focused on peat reduction through layered substrate construction, which showed that while lower peat content can reduce water buffering, a layered approach provides more homogeneous water distribution. Additionally, studies on the 'Karima' variety demonstrated that heavier plants achieved higher yields, and research into light-free cultivation suggested that applying red light during the generative phase can increase flower cluster development.
Meanwhile, the 72nd Agrarische Schouw in Joure attracted thousands of visitors, focusing on the theme ‘AI or the farmer, who is at the helm?’. The event highlighted the role of artificial intelligence, data, and technology in modern farming. The exhibition saw significant interest from political figures, including representatives from the De Fryske Marren municipality and the province of Fryslân, addressing topics ranging from nitrogen issues to the future livability of rural areas. The event featured 163 exhibitors and included discussions on data architecture and information solutions in dairy farming.
