Agricultural institutions launch initiatives to boost food security in Nigeria

In Nigeria, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the Adamawa State Government have validated a climate-resilient livelihoods strategy spanning 2026 to 2030. Developed alongside the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), the framework aims to align agricultural investments with durable solutions for internally displaced persons, returnees, and vulnerable host communities.

The strategy focuses on climate-smart agriculture, including soil fertility management, aquaculture, livestock vaccination, and access to finance for women. The resulting operational document is intended to assist the Adamawa government in resource mobilization by outlining required investment costs and expected returns for donors.

Separately, in Zaria, Kaduna State, the Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) and the African Seed Trade Association (AFSTA) held a workshop to accelerate the commercialization of improved crop varieties. Under the African Cereal and Legume Breeding Consortium (ACLBC), the initiative seeks to engage 200 seed companies to scale up hybrids developed by CGIAR research centres, aiming to bridge the gap between scientific research and practical application on African farms.
