Agricultural management of corn residues and catch crops in Poland
In Poland, where corn for grain occupies approximately 1.35 million hectares, managing post-harvest residues presents both nutritional opportunities and technical challenges. Corn residues, including straw, sediment, and roots, provide significant organic matter and nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. However, these residues can also serve as habitats for pests and pathogens.
Effective management involves proper plowing or mulching to accelerate decomposition. Mulching catch crops like mustard, phacelia, or lupin can help break down large amounts of biomass, protect soil from erosion, and reduce water evaporation. While mulching aids mineralization and nutrient availability for subsequent crops, it requires additional machinery use, fuel, and operational costs.
