Agricultural organizations in Brazil propose climate resilience measures

Agricultural leaders in Brazil are advocating for new protections to mitigate the impact of extreme weather on farming. In Rio Grande do Sul, the Fetag-RS federation is engaging with the incoming government to highlight the socio-economic importance of family farming. The sector generates R$ 47 billion annually in gross production value and employs over 700,000 people. Fetag-RS is seeking measures to address rural debt and improve access to affordable crop insurance to combat climate change effects.

In Paraná, the Sistema Faep has formally proposed the creation of a state catastrophe fund to the governor. The fund aims to help producers rebuild infrastructure and replace machinery damaged by storms, hail, and tornadoes. Recent data from the State Civil Defense shows that 94 climate-related disasters occurred in 87 municipalities in early November alone, causing R$ 38.4 million in damages and affecting over 30,000 people. The proposal warns that without structured aid, rural credit delinquency could rise significantly.
