Agricultural pests and natural gardening solutions

Agricultural and gardening advice highlights the impact of snails on plant growth and the potential benefits of using pinecones as a natural garden resource.

In agriculture, the Institute of Plant Protection – PIB warns that snails pose an increasing threat to rapeseed, wheat, and corn crops in Poland. These pests can damage germinating seeds and young seedlings, particularly in moist, heavy, or poorly drained soils. In severe local cases, snail activity can lead to crop losses of up to 50 percent. Farmers are advised to monitor fields closely after rainfall, especially when temperatures exceed 20°C.

For gardeners, pinecones can serve as a free alternative to bark mulch. When spread over soil, they help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature, which is beneficial for acid-loving plants like blueberries and hydrangeas. Additionally, the uneven surface of pinecones can act as a physical barrier against snails and rodents. They can also be used in compost to improve aeration or placed at the bottom of flowerpots to assist with drainage.
