Agricultural reports show rising Australian yields and expected U.S. market volatility
Agricultural reports from Australia and the United States indicate significant shifts in crop production and market volatility. In Australia, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) has raised its national wheat yield forecast by 11.7% to 29.8mmt due to favorable winter rainfall in Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia. This would mark the eighth-largest crop on record, despite a 17% decrease compared to 2025 caused by smaller plantings. Additionally, barley production is forecast to increase by 16%, and canola production is expected to rise by 18% compared to previous June forecasts.
In the United States, the upcoming USDA September supply and demand report (WASDE) is expected to trigger market volatility. Analysts note that corn and soybean markets frequently experience price swings of 10 to 20 cents following the report. Current estimates suggest a potential reduction in national corn yield to 178.1 bushels per acre, while soybean yield estimates are expected to decline only slightly. Market uncertainty is further heightened by record-long positions established by managed money.
