Agricultural research advances greenhouse design and erosion control in Spain

Agricultural research in Spain is highlighting new methods for improving crop protection and managing soil health. In Almería, the evolution of greenhouse structures has transitioned from simple wooden-post parral greenhouses to more advanced designs. Innovations led by the Las Palmerillas Experimental Station include gabled structures with tubular frames to reduce rainwater entry, cable-and-tube support systems to facilitate machinery use, and mechanized plastic rolling systems for improved ventilation.

Separately, a study by the Institute of Sustainable Agriculture (IAS-CSIC) has demonstrated that vegetative barriers are an effective tool for reducing erosion in arid and semi-arid climates. Research led by José Antonio Muñoz Sánchez shows that these barriers can retain an average of 62.6% of sediment and 40.1% of runoff. The study notes that retention efficiency for runoff and sediment tends to be higher in arid regions compared to humid ones, providing a viable alternative for protecting agricultural landscapes in water-scarce environments.
