Agricultural research examines barley nutrition and amino acid effects on animal growth

Research studies have examined the nutritional impact of barley components and amino acid supplementation on animal growth.

One study investigated how barley endosperm amylose and β-glucan content, combined with different hull processing methods, affects nutrient digestibility and growth in weaned pigs. The research compared low amylose and β-glucan (LAB) endosperm against high amylose and β-glucan (HAB) endosperm, alongside untreated oat hull, untreated barley hull, and steam-exploded (StE) barley hull. Findings indicated that in certain phases, LAB endosperm resulted in higher apparent total tract digestibility of gross energy and crude protein when paired with oat or barley hulls.

Another study explored the role of threonine as a potential secondary limiting amino acid in cereal-based substrates for Tenebrio molitor larvae. Using a barley-based substrate, researchers tested the effects of supplementing diets with lysine, threonine, or a combination of both to observe changes in larval growth performance, protein content, and amino acid profiles.
