Agricultural research explores vermicomposting and nano-fertilization
Research in New Zealand and the United States is exploring advanced fertilization and waste management techniques to improve agricultural sustainability and crop yields.
In New Zealand, studies demonstrated that the compost worm, Eisenia fetida Savigny, can produce high-quality vermicompost from mixtures of chicken dissolved air flotation (DAF) sludge and cardboard. Field trials on a market garden farm showed that applying vermicast at 25 t fresh matter per hectare increased onion density and yield, as well as maize grain kernel mass, particularly during dry seasons when crops faced abiotic stress.
In the United States, research has focused on optimizing nitrogen fertilization for wheat. Given that crops typically recover only about 42% of applied nitrogen, scientists are evaluating foliar fertilization and the use of nanoscale biocompatible nitrogen carriers. These methods aim to improve nutrient uptake efficiency, increase grain protein concentration, and minimize environmental degradation caused by nitrogen leaching and gaseous emissions.
