Agricultural researchers develop eco-friendly solutions to combat fruit rot

A student from the Universidad Nacional de Trujillo has proposed a biodegradable film made from corn starch integrated with biosynthesized silver nanoparticles. This technology aims to reduce reliance on synthetic fungicides and single-use plastics by inhibiting fungal growth during storage.
In Chile, a team from the Universidad Autónoma de Chile, supported by the Fundación para la Innovación Agraria (FIA), is testing ozonated grape seed oil to protect cherries. This project seeks to repurpose a byproduct of the wine industry to limit Botrytis cinerea growth. The goal is to maintain fruit quality—including firmness, color, and flavor—while reducing chemical exposure for agricultural workers. If successful, the application could be scaled for packing centers and extended to other fruits like blueberries and strawberries.
