Agricultural sector faces crisis due to climate change and production costs

The agricultural sector is facing significant challenges driven by climate change, rising production costs, and market imbalances. In Greece, specifically in Zakynthos, olive oil producers are reportedly receiving less than 3 euros per kilogram, while retail prices reach up to 8 euros per kilogram. This disparity, combined with high cultivation costs and labor shortages, has led to warnings regarding the potential collapse of rural production.

On a global scale, the climate crisis and depletion of natural resources are threatening food security. At an international summit in Bhutan, participants from 65 countries discussed the importance of protecting traditional farming practices against extreme weather, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss. Countries such as Spain and Greece are facing similar threats from prolonged droughts and heatwaves, which impact essential crops like olives, grapes, and fruit.

Experts suggest that addressing these issues requires more than just technological solutions and funding; it necessitates a shift in mindset regarding land management and environmental protection. Utilizing local varieties and improving water management are highlighted as critical strategies for adaptation.
