Agricultural sector faces rising demand and climate challenges
Global food demand is rising due to population growth, while the agricultural sector faces significant challenges from climate change and economic volatility. In Austria, approximately 1.2 million tons of food are wasted annually, with 560,000 tons considered avoidable, according to a recent survey by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.
Rising costs are further complicating the industry. Diesel prices, which impact both machinery operation and logistics, saw a significant increase from 850 dollars per ton in early July to nearly 1,470 dollars per ton in mid-September. This spike is partly attributed to geopolitical conflicts that have damaged refineries in Russia, a major former exporter.
Additionally, extreme weather events linked to climate change are causing record-breaking crop damage. In Austria, damages from drought, hail, and frost have reached nearly one billion euros this year. These factors, combined with the need to maximize yields from shrinking arable land, are making the agricultural sector an increasingly important area for investment.
